Lesson 4: Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson (part 1)
Judge a book by its cover?
In this lesson Mark introduces the story of Treasure Island, gives a short reading of the text below and then shares three guided reading questions.

Guided Reading Questions
After reading the full extract you could ask:

1. It says 'he was plainly blind' - how would you know this by using examples from the text?
(retrieval question)

2. Stevenson refers to the narrator's arm being gripped like a vice. How would you feel in the same situation? Does the word eyeless have more impact than plainly blind?
(inference question)

3. Discuss the phrase 'never judge a book by its cover' - what impression does the character give in this extract and can his behaviour ever be excused? Is it wrong to judge a book by its cover? Why/why not?
(P4C / 'Big idea' question)
